GREEN SUPER RICE: 2011-03-27

Rice production in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia is constantly under the pressure of various kinds of stress- drought, limited nutrient input, poor soils and pest infections. Recent scientific advances achieved by the Chinese rice scientists have accelerated the development of new varieties that can withstand drought, flooding, cold weather and toxic minerals such as salt and high iron.

The Green Super Rice project seeks to develop, within the next three years, at least fifteen new rice varieties and deliver them to small-hold farmers in Africa (seven countries) and Asia (eight countries including China) to an accumulation of eleven million hectares of farm lands in the target regions and increase an annual rice productivity by thirteen million tons.

Additionally, the Green Super Rice project will include building a highly efficient genotyping platform for the large-scale molecular breeding activities in the target countries and for the international rice research community.
